Just Another Week

Hey, folks. We’re back again and we’re doing well down here. We hope all is well with you all. There’s not been much change for us; just taking things easy and enjoying the scenery.

Kofi came down last week (April 7th) as you know, and we all had a good time together. On Easter Sunday morning we got ready to go to the Nicholsonboro Baptist Church which is about 2 minutes away, but when we got there, the church was closed. Maybe they had a sunrise service, or maybe they combined with another church. Anyway, we wound up going to another church which was fine with us. Kofi looked real slick in his shirt and tie (and dreadlocks), and he showed good “church manners”. Later that day our friend Sara came by with some serious strawberry shortcake.

On Monday, Jesse and Kofi went out to Tybee Island fishing and had a lot of fun, even though they didn’t catch anything. But that’s how it goes sometime. When they got back, Jo made Kofi caste a plaster face mask which he thought was real neat. Then he had Jesse tell him some folk stories before he went to bed. He really likes those bedtime stories, even makes up his own to tell Granddaddy. Tuesday we took Kofi back to Jacksonville airport for his trip back to Maryland. When Kofi had “down time”, he read (remember, we only have 2 TV channels). He recommends the “Stink Moody” series and also a children’s book written by Steven Hawking, George’s Secret Key to the Universe.

Friday the 17th, the local chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity had a Mardi Gras at the Savannah Civic Center which we attended in costume. The brothers decorated the place in purple and gold, and there were about 800 people partying there. There were no police doing security detail. No need. And that’s the way it should be.

On Saturday, we attended “The Gathering” at Geechee Kunda in Riceboro, down in the country. It was an all day celebration of the Geechee culture, with drumming, storytelling, singing, poetry recitations by the children, food, and some interesting vendors. (Jo is pictured here pointing to Wadmalaw Island, SC, where her mother's father was born). Jim and Pat Bacote were wonderful hosts, and a young brother, Jamal, who is on a national commission to preserve the Geechee culture, was the MC. Jamal is also a wonderfully gifted storyteller and educator. His commitment to passing along knowledge of the struggle is amazing. One of the vendors was a sister from Waycross who, along with her husband, runs the Sankofa Retreat Castle. Check out their web site. They are doing some interesting wholistic health work. Needless to say, we’ll be returning to Geechee Kunda.

We have come upon our first challenge of this area – the sand gnats (as in insects). These little buggers have feasted on both of us. You can’t kill them because you can’t see them, so they just bite away. Even though we wear long pants, they go up our pants legs and feast there too. So, right now, especially at night, we are unhappy soldiers. But this too shall pass.

Well, we’ve given you our “blow by blow” for the week. We’ll check in next week. Until then, stay well and keep laughing. Peace.

Jo Ann and Jesse
